Helium + Party Balloon + Camera = Aerial Photography

Earlier this year, a high school class in Catalonia attached a plain digital camera (shockproofed & w/ remote shutter) to a large helium balloon and when they let it go, the thing went up over 19 miles off the sea level. Needless to say, the pictures came out fuckin' amazing. While it cost them about a thousand euros for the fancy science project, getting your camera up in the air isn't exactly like rocket science. This dude apparently got his camera 600 ft high for less than 50 bucks and here's how:

Materials: 40" Round Party Balloon, Remote Shutter Trigger, Helium, Camera, Kite Strings OR Fish Lines

Pick a camera (preferably lightweight & cheap) and shockproof it (like this).
Hook up your camera to a remote shutter trigger; set it up on a flat board.
Fill up a 40" party balloon with helium (each lifts approx. 8oz); don't let it go.
Attach camera setup and party balloon to kite strings / fish lines (upto 600 ft).
Find optimal grounds (where it's less windy) and let it gently rise; take some pictures.

But I gotta throw it out there, I haven't tried this out myself yet, so take my words with discretion.

By narrowing down the line of focus on a particular object, you can stage a "toy-like" scenery out of an otherwise ordinary landscape. Also, check out these 50 examples of tilt-shift photography and if you're interested in trying this jam out, there are couple ways to do this: 1) you can buy a special lense (starting from $1000 and up) or 2) you can process your photos using Photoshop or try the Tilt-Shift Generator.

In celebrating the 30th anniversary of popular anime Mobil Suit Gundam, engineers in Tokyo built a life-size, 1/1 scale model of a RX-78 Gundam robot (known as the Real G) at a park in Odaiba Island. The massive statue stands tall at 59 foot (18m) and features a remote-controllable head unit, 50 different light emitting units and 14 mist dispensers for visual effects and possibly, for watering the park lawn. The robot will stay in Shiokze Park from 7/11 - 8/30, so if you're in Tokyo this summer, check it:

Thanks to massive fields of penguin poo across the Antarctica, scientists are supposedly able to trace the migratory patterns of Emperor penguins via satelite image feeds. Apparently, British biologists have found at least 38 breeding colonies (including 10 new ones) along the Antarctic coast, all of them highlighted by large brown stains in the all-white terrains.

"We can't see actual penguins on the satellite maps because the resolution isn't good enough. But during the breeding season the birds stay at a colony for eight months," said Peter Fretwell of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). "The ice gets pretty dirty and it's the guano stains that we can see."

Woody Allen settles for $5 Million

You may have heard about Woody Allen's recent copyright feud with American Apparel. Well, he won the battle yesterday and walked away with $5 million in settlement. And so the case is over, but questions still remain as to what exactly prompted the multinational "alternative" clothing company to assume that Allen wouldn't make a fuss about his face being copied & pasted on their billboards. Did the AA marketing directors feel some vague sort of empathy/indie-connection with the celebrated filmmaker? Or did the copyright laws just slip their minds when they right-clicked on "Save and Download Image As"?

Which brings up the real question and the point that I want to over-stretch from this episode: are copyright laws still "real" in the year 2009? I am just saying, I think Woody is great and all, but I seriously doubt that $5 million he scored will leave any permanent lessons to be learned. Just saying.

You've probably heard the news: there's a Twitterati orbiting around the Earth. Mike Massimino, one of the five NASA astronauts partaking in the eleven day long mission to repair and update the Hubble Telescope, has officially become the first person to tweet from the space shuttle Atlantis.

Technically, it's not like Mike can log into Twitter while checking out weekend pics of his NASA friends playing beer pong on Facebook or anything; he has to first send his tweets via e-mail to the Houston headquarters, from where the astronaut's messages are secondhandedly posted by the staff. According to this space tech blog:

"Internet access in space is a significantly different animal than here on Earth. The International Space Station has WiFi routers onboard, much like the ones in most businesses and homes. But those routers are typically used for local area wireless connectivity. Internet access - if it can even be called that - is heavily mediated by Mission Control for a variety of security and technical reasons."

But still, it's gotta be kinda exciting to be socially networked from where he is. For the record, the US space agency did successfully test out their wi-fi network (a.k.a Disruption-Tolerant Networking) last year and it may soon be put to widespread use in the near future. And we all thought Starbucks was gonna beat them to it.

This is called train dodging. Apparently, doing cartwheels or backflips doesn't cut it for the kids anymore. According to Russia English:

Ruppy, the world's first glow-in-the-dark puppy, came to life recently, when a team of South Korean scientists extracted fibroblast cells found in sea anemons, which were then virally injected into the puppy's nucleus. Having a crappy day? Want to get the hell out of earth for like half an hour? Then checkity-check this out: NASA Space Recordings of Earth. For thirty minutes, you can hear all sorts of ambient noises in the background that you'd probably expect to hear in Thom Yorke's latest "i am so much weirder than you" solo project er something [You can check out my logs on the recording here]. According to this one science blog:

"Although space is a vacuum, this does not mean that there is no sound. It only means that there is no air in space to act as a medium to transmit soundwaves to your ear. instruments were specially designed by NASA to pick up and record these vibrational frequencies. The sounds you hear are interactions of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, plasma wave phenomena and interactions between Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere. These vibration frequencies are all exactly within the range of human hearing, 20 - 20,000 Hz."

If you are the type of person who can get down with snow globes (like me), you'd probably drool all over these dream-like diorama sculptures made by a Brooklyn-based artist known as Thomas Doyle. The guy works with micro-scale 3D landscapes in glass-sealed containers and stages dreamlike scenarios (many of them are pretty twisted too, like this one) with intricate models of tiny village people. Earlier this year, I had a chance to see some of his dioramas at an NYU gallery and the level of intricacy behind these things are more than impressive. Photography project from sophomore year. I spent a lot of time in darkroom to make these prints and I have no idea where it all went. But that's okay because I got a digital camera, so I can just make it again, in like two minutes.

I've always liked Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (a.k.a. Owen Ashworth) and now, I am definitely obsessed. I CAN'T STOP watching this animated M/V for "White Corolla," a really catchy sounding track from his latest record, Advance Base Battery Life. The animals dancing in the video (including the one-armed panda!) were drawn by Julia Pott, a London-based illustrator; you can find more of her illustrations and other works here. Good stuff.

I love the things I can find on YouTube. I came across this great footage of John Lennon and Bob Dylan sharing a limo ride during Dylan's 1966 tour across england. Watch it for yourself, but don't expect to hear pretty songs 'cause he looks kind of wasted. But you can hear Lennon saying: "oooh, John's going to shit again."

The footage was originally filmed as part of Dylan's self-directed documentary, Eat the Document, which never became released in public due to its thorough lack of mainstream values. Apparently, he wasn't quiet the craftiest filmmaker and only the fragments of his documentary have been circulating around the fan circles and YouTube.

freedom ship: florida's exit plan

If ever constructed (although doubtful), this floating ridiculousness would be the biggest ship and of course, the biggest duty-free shopping mall in the world. According to the proposal, the ship would house up to 4,000 full-time residents while continuously circumnavigating the earth with 100,000 people on board. Click here for the ship's proposed itinerary. Other features include a K-12 school system (with an ambition to set a global standard in education), a first-class hospital, banks, casinos, light manufacturing factories (!) and apparently, a shuttle train (see dissection pic). Originally proposed as "Walking City" by a British avant-garde architect, the idea is to roam around the world while moving from a port-city to another, according to the city's needs in resources.

It's a cool idea, but it still sounds a lot like living on a cruise ship, or a floating Florida or something. And how do these sci-fi projects always end up being the same old crap? I guess maritime libraries are pretty cool, but what about like, a really huge 24-hour make-out cathedral with strobe lights. or at least a see-through aquarium in the bottom deck. And I guess nobody saw the pirates coming in the year 2000.
